Practice beginning sounds and heart words / high frequency words with this secret heart words beginning sounds activity! 

This is the perfect way to review beginning sounds, word mapping, and high frequency words / heart words in small groups, centers, or one-on-one.

Students write (or place) the letter that represents the first sound in the picture. When finished, they will have a “word mapped” high frequency word. Then, when applicable, students take a “heart” and clip it to the “heart part” of the word.

What’s included with this high frequency word activity?

• Over 300 word cards included (see list below)

The “Heart Part”

• To make the heart clips, cut out provided hearts. Then, glue them to clothespins. I used mini clothespins, but full size will work!
• Option - Students can just place the heart over the heart part, and avoid clips/clothespins altogether.

Two ways to play:

• Laminate or use a plastic sleeve and expo marker to make this a write and wipe activity. Students clip heart part on the card or sleeve.
• Use letter tiles or magnetic letters to build the word (as seen in the photos) and then “clip” the heart part.
• Option - Make it self-checking!
  • By writing the heart word (with the heart parts included) lightly in pencil on the back of the card, your students will be able to check their work!

Do you have an answer key?

Yes. An answer key is included.

• Only the irregular words have the “heart part” revealed in the answer key.
• This is because temporary heart words (flash words) will vary according to where you are in your scope and sequence.

What Words Are Included?

This includes all of the words from the following high frequency word lists:

• Fry’s first 100 sight words, Fry’s 2nd 100 sight words, Dolch Pre-K, Dolch Kindergarten, Dolch first grade, and Dolch second grade.

Please note that these words are organized in order of length, which we did to minimize excess paper use when printing.

• Blank templates for words from 2-9 letters are included as a PowerPoint file. Please note beginning sound images are NOT included per clipart terms of use.
