Are you looking for an engaging way to practice short versus long vowels? Are CVC and CVCe words tricking your students? Say and Color Vowels - Short VS Long incorporate images, writing, and coloring to practice these two important skills.
First, students complete the writing activity. This can be done in a group or independently. They say the picture and then circle "short" or "long", depending on the vowel sound. Then they fill in the missing vowel (consonants provided for picture support) and the silent e (if CVCe). This page then serves as a picture guide for the coloring portion of the activity. This is a great way for all students to extend learning. It also helps EL/ESL students by providing vocabulary for each picture.
Students look at each picture and say the word aloud. Then they color that picture (and the area around it) based on the vowel sound. Was it a CVC word family listed on the page, or was it a long vowel sound?. At the end their picture will reveal a surprise! Hint: It will be one of the vowels.
